Exploring Geoenergy in Finland and Beyond - Current Research and Future Directions at the University of Turku
This talk explores our group’s current research on fluid flow in volcanic and crystalline basement rocks and why it matters for CO₂ sequestration, geothermal energy, natural hydrogen prospectivity, critical elements in geothermal brines, and nuclear waste disposal. Across these topics, the central challenge is understanding how faults, fractures, and lithological variability control permeability, storage capacity, and long-term fluid migration—from the pore scale to entire crustal blocks. I will present results from our multi-scale, multidisciplinary research, combining laboratory measurements, field analogues, seismic interpretation, drone-based mapping, and numerical modeling, to explain why some volcanic and basement geobodies evolve into effective reservoirs while others do not. A highlight of the talk is the Giants of Cochamó project in Chilean Patagonia, where we climbed granite walls over 1,000 m high to directly access and map kilometre-scale crystalline reservoirs. Cochamó offers a rare, natural window into fracture networks and fluid pathways that are otherwise inaccessible, providing a powerful analogue for Finland, where crystalline basement rocks are largely buried or covered, yet central to future energy-transition solutions.
